My son repeated the experiment mentioned and also repeated the experiment with CO2. He also did the experiment with a control jar using water vapor and CO2. He won first place in South Plains Regional Science Fair. He received a certificate of outstanding achievement from the American Meteorological Society for the experiments. Thanks to the administrator of this web site for the great idea. The data for the experiments can be found at http://tnn93w.tripod.com/

Nick

That seems wrong. Isn’t it the air that stores the water for a rainy day?

Yes that too!!

Jae
“yeah, the water and the air store some of the solar energy for a rainy day.”

Maybe he needs a good science advisor.

Large sectors of the economy insolvent and oil cheap as chips, so taxpayer funded green initiatives are the answer?

David, this subject has just assumed another angle with the PM offering free insulation batts in homes. I have not done my homework fully yet, but as I understand it, it's heat in, heat out, circulation versus radiation again.

The main deficiency (of insulation) appears to be in Queensland and I think that is the free market at work. The batts do not work well. They cause the ceiling space to heat up more quicky by preventing heat flow to the rooms below. After a while, the insulation itself reaches the same temperature as inside the ceiling and the insulation effect starts to fail as similarly, the room below starts to reach equilibrium also. Like in your work, one more layer only delays the inevitable.

They are more popular down south here because of the dynamics. They prevent some heat buildup in rooms until the cool of the evening takes over in an average scenario. The last hot period of 4 days over 40C and hot nights would possibly yield, on analysis, the conclusion that they were no use after a day or so.

On the negative side of the economic ledger, the eforts and funds of people in manufacture, transport (many trucks for few batts), installation and fireproofing precautions add to the GHG burden if people want to go down that path.

I'm sure there are more useful ways to spend taxpayer money, like dropping stamp duty or payroll tax or reducing GST and/or income and company tax. It's because these have been too high that the PM can make these silly promises about "green homes".

Another way of saying it is, the temperature of the ends of the experiment, the tile and the glass, are constrained only by the incoming solar flux, the material they are made of (absorption, reflectance, opacity), and heat losses (convection conduction for the glass, conduction for the tile). What is between them, its IR opacity, is irrelevant, and can't affect the temperature at the end points, because they are constrained.

David: Whew, I'm more confused than usual. Could you elaborate a little?

Are we not inventing a lot of complicated equations and theory which say, ultimately, "yeah, the water and the air store some of the solar energy for a rainy day."
